Wear Happy Color Month 2021 Recap

In the Instagram world, March is Wear Happy Color Month. It’s a movement that was started by Katie Kortman 3 years ago. It helps you revive your wardrobe and experiment with color combinations in ways you wouldn’t have before. You can read more on her blog here. It’s a really fun challenge with ambassador, prizes and lots of interaction. This year it was expanded to be inclusive of everyone, not just makers.  It’s fun to follow the challenge hash tags #wearhappycolor2021 #sewhappycolor and #knithappycolor to find different people to follow and interact with. It’s been one of my favorite challenges and I try to post a new outfit everyday of the month. Below is the schedule of what the color scheme was each week.

I tend to gravitate more towards black and grays in my wardrobe choices. However, as I have been participating in Wear Happy Color month over the last two years I been reaching for more colorful combinations. It’s amazing what a little color can do to your mood. Having a color theme for each week was really fun. Last year along with the weekly color theme, I think Katie gave us a prompt for each day too ie: analogous, complimentary, split complimentary, monochromatic. This year we got to choose our own combinations each day which I think was a lot more fun.

Here are my weekly recaps for Monday-Saturday

Week One: Red/Pink week

I wear a lot of Red but I don’t have hardly any pink. I really tried to stretch myself to find a good pink combo and came up with three. Tues- Monochromatic (Pink & Red), Thur- Triad(Pink, Blue, Green) Friday- Analogous(Pink, Purple, Red). The Other days were my red combos. They weren’t perfect but I really enjoyed these combos and will definitely wear them throughout the year.

Patterns I wore above were:

Mon: Sabrina Slims and Harmony Blouse

Tues: Sybil Skirt Plantain Tee

Wed: Hacked Esma Top

Thurs: Oversized Tee and Watsonia Pants

Fri: Burnside Bibs and Vera Top

Sat: Sewrority wear top, Sabrina Slims and and upcycled Bomber Jacket I made from and old button up shirt.

Week Two: Yellow/Orange week

This week was super fun. I love yellow but had originally thought I had ZERO orange in my wardrobe. I was mistaken. Turns out I had quite a bit. I was able to do complementary orange on Monday and Tuesday then analogous orange on Wednesday and Friday. My sister in law and her daughter were in town for Friday so I got them in on the fun and made us some shirts with Yellow in them which I think had a faux split complimentary color scheme. That’s where you do complimentary colors and then take the analogous color of one of them.

Patterns I wore above were:

Mon: Forte top and ready to wear skirt

Tues: Blanc tee hacked to a dress with longer sleeves

Wed: Iris tee and Oceanside Pants

Thurs: Remy Raglan and Sabrina Slims

Fri: Lotus Blossom Blouse and I’m wearing Allegro Shorts

Sat: Margot Peplum and Sybil Skirt

Week Three: Green week

I learned that I liked Green more than I had originally thought. Definitely making more of it. Wednesday was the only day that I didn’t wear clothes I had made. That’s ok though because this challenge is for everyone, not just those who make their own clothes. My youngest son has always said he LOVES green and after this week, I totally see why. Nature is full of green and its wonderful! Plus how cute is Lime Green and Hot Pink? Way cute. Hopefully I have more green to show for next March.

Patterns I wore above were:

Mon: Harmony Blouse and Watsonia Pants

Tues: McCall’s #8035 and self drafted pencil skirt

Wed: ready to wear

Thurs: Iris tee and Glissando bottoms

Fri: Harmony Blouse and self drafted pencil skirt

Sat: Verbena Dress

Week Four: Blue week

I love Blue and probably could have gone two weeks wearing it. I learned I love Blue and Orange and Blue and Yellow. Probably the MVP of the week would have to be my yellow Sabrina Slims. I wore them twice: Monday and Friday. My most “Liked” look for this week was my most “Liked” post of the year so far and that’s Wednesday’s Paper Theory Zadie Jumpsuit. It’s always a big hit amongst the crowd and I highly recommend that pattern to everyone.

Patterns I wore above were:

Mon: Melody Dolman and Sabrina Slims

Tues: Free Range Slack and Muse concert tee

Wed: Zadie Jumpsuit

Thurs: Sabrina Slims, Classic Tee and Canyon Cardigan

Fri: Rivage Raglan Upcycle and Sabrina Slims

Sat: Iris tee and Oceanside Pants

Week Five: Violet week

Violet/Purple is a great color and I love how it looks with my hair. It was a shame that this week was only four days. I only got a picture on one day for this week so I just shared my 5 favorite Violet looks. To make the sunset post in the polka dot dress count, I wore lavender earrings. I don’t own a lot of Violet/Purple so that will definitely need to change for next year. It gives me something to look for when I search for fabric or go to thrift stores.

The patterns are from left to right:

Allison Tent dress

Thrifted Dress with Obi belt I made from old ties

Ruska tee and Palisade pants

Kielo Wrap dress

Simplicity #8982 with waist tie hack

I was a winner!

Certain Companies sponsor this challenge. Each week during Wear Happy Color Month, there is a winner. Well my Zadie jumpsuit post was so popular that it won me a prize on blue week. It was the Charlotte Stone Twyla Loafers. It was such a generous gift and I can’t thank them enough for sending them to me. Literally at NO cost! I can’t wait to wear them with all my colorful Memade clothes!

Have you ever participated in a challenge like this? If so what did you learn? If you haven’t I would definitely encourage you to do so. You may even get lucky and win some fancy shoes!

Happy Sewing my Friends!
