DIY Bootcut Velvet Pants
You all know I love skirt dresses and jumpsuits. Living in such a hot climate has taught me to reach for the simple, comfortable clothing items for everyday wear. It’s just what I like. On the occasion that the temps take a dip I do like to have a few things that are not just comfortable, but are warm and look good too. So for Fall I decided to pick a pants pattern and make all the different options in different fabrics. That way I would have a perfectly curated fall pants wardrobe. Keep reading to see what pattern I used and learn some tips to make yourself some amazing velvet pants too!
The Pattern!
First the pattern I chose is the Resolution Bottoms from Love Notions Patterns. This pattern includes five views: joggers, straight leg yoga pants, bootcut yoga pants, plain leggings and leggings with a moto panel. All views have two waistband options: contoured with 3/8″ elastic and yoga style. All views also have a shaped back yoke. The joggers & yoga pants have front slash pockets while the leggings have a front hidden pocket option. These bottoms are meant for knit fabrics and are beginner friendly.

The Fabric!
I absolutely love velvet although, I wouldn’t recommend sewing pants in velvet for a first time sewing project. Velvet isn’t a great beginner fabric. It can roll on the edges and be a bit shifty. I’ve been sewing for quite some time so I decided to go with a fabric that I love to make dresses out of. It’s comfortable and looks great. Plus the idea of having a pair of velvet pants to hang out at home or run errands in just seemed really nice. Express knit and Mily Mae both have some great velvet fabric color options.
Fabric with Nap!
I love this wine colored velvet because I knew it would go with a lot of things in my wardrobe. Something to be aware of when sewing with velvet is the nap. What is nap? A nap appears to be lighter or darker shades of color from different angles. In addition to the velvet, velour, terry cloth, corduroy, and suede fabric are examples of fabric with nap too. Because of the nap all the main fabric pieces need to be cut out so the nap is going the same way. Otherwise you could have pant legs that look different colors or the front and back could look different colors.
Which Style Did I Make?
Wide leg pants are super trendy right now so of course I had to make the bootcut yoga pants option. Velvet has more weight to it than knit you would typically use for this pattern so I chose the contoured band. The ⅜ inch elastic would work great to keep the velvet waistband inplace . Although you could add elastic to the middle of the yoga waistband too if that’s the style preferred.
A Tip about Velvet Pockets!
The front slash pockets on this pattern are perfect for keeping a cell phone, some cash, or your car keys. However I would highly recommend not making the entire pocket out of velvet though. You can do the liner in the velvet since it will be seen but I suggest NOT doing the bag in velvet. A knit fabric that has a little slip to it would be much better. Something like ITY or some other type of light weight fabric with stretch and slip.
Velvet tends to be clingy on the fuzzy side. By doing the bag in a different fabric it will make it easier to get your hand in and out of your pocket.
I gotta tell you, after making these velvet pants I’m convinced everyone needs a pair. I can’t stop wearing them! Stay tuned to see the other Resolution bottoms I made with this amazing pattern. If you are interested in the Resolution pattern you can use code KOE10 to receive 10% off.
