Pinsperation Curved Hem Hack!

Do you ever find yourself scrolling through pinterest or online boutiques for fashion inspiration? Well I do. I find it super thrilling to challenge myself that way. I don’t try to make an exact replica but I do try to capture the same vibe of the fashion that I see. For instance,  I kept coming across some wide-legged, curved hemmed, cropped pants. I thought they were super cute, but I just wasn’t willing to pay what they were listed for. So I decided to put my own spin on it and make my own. Read more “Pinsperation Curved Hem Hack!”

Upcylce Some Old Jeans into Some New Summer Shoes!

Can you make a pair of cute summer shoes for under $10? Absolutely, and it’s super easy too. A few summers ago I made some shoes using a kit I ordered from a company called A Happy Stitch . It was really fun and simple but it got me wondering if there were other options I could use for the soles. Then it hit me: Could I use flip flops? Sure, why not? Keep reading to see how I turned a pair of old jeans and some flip flops into some comfy shoes perfect for summer.

Supplies…

The only thing I purchased for this project was the soles. I found these white flip flops for less than $5 at Walmart. I thought they would be perfect for the soles of the shoes. I also had a pair of old jeans that I thought would look great as a pair of shoes, so I used that for the shoe fabric. I had some black cotton yarn and several embroidery needles. Plus, I already had the shoe pattern from when I made my previous pair a couple years ago. If you don’t have one you can easily find them for men and women on etsy. Or you can try your hand at making your own.

Preparing the shoe and soles…

I cut the straps off and then glued the little circle things back into the holes on the bottom of the flip flops so they won’t let little rock or water in. It’s really up to you whether or not you do this. Then, To make sure all my stitched were even, I made a little mark every ⅝” all the way around my flip flops so I would know where to put the needle.

The pattern says to cut 2 of out and 2 of liner fabrics. I used some thinner, tan fabric scraps I had for the liner. I didn’t want to use the denim for both the inside and outside because it would have been too thick to hand sew to the flip flop soles.

Fitting the shoes…

Once I had the different shoe parts assembled I needed to fit them to my foot before attaching them to the flip flop soles. To do that I situated my foot on the flip flop and then pinned the other parts together, making sure they would fit both the flip flop sole and my foot. Then I sewed them at the sides with my sewing machine.

Stitching the Sole…

Once the shoe uppers were fitted and stitched I  could attach them to the flip flop sole. You do this by using a blanket stitch. If you don’t know what that is, here is a video that demonstrates that really well. It took me 45 min per shoe to blanket stitch the top to the flip flop.

Finishing touch…

Once it was done I felt like it needed something else. So I looked in my craft box and found a spool of Jute. So I cut four strands long enough to go around the bottom of the shoe and glued it on. I really like the way that it turned out. I feel like it makes them look less homemade.

The flip flops soles are super comfy and I think I like them more than the first pair I made. They were super fun and really easy to make. Not sure how durable they are but I will definitely be wearing them this Summer for as long as I can. I would definitely recommend you try this if you want to make your own shoes this Summer.

Sew the Juliet Top With Me!

You might take one look at Love Notions Juliet top and think, “That’s so cute but it looks like it might be difficult and I’m not doing pintucks.” At least that’s what I did. So guess what? You don’t have to sew pintucks. There’s a plain yoke view and I sewed it up in a little over an hour. It was super easy and I documented a little along the way to share with you all in case you wanted to make one too. The pattern comes with amazing instructions, but sometimes it’s encouraging to see someone else sew something together.  Here’s what that looked like. Read more “Sew the Juliet Top With Me!”

Mother and Son Matching Star Wars Shorts!

Sometime in March my middle son, who is 16 years old came to me and said, “Why haven’t you made us matching outfits yet?” I thought, is this guy for real?! All I have ever wanted is make all the people I love wear matching outfits with me. At Easter and Christmas all my boys get ties to match my dresses. I send my friends handmade birthday and Christmas gifts that secretly match me. So I asked him what he meant. Then he reminded me how I made matching overalls with his older brother and matching raglan tees with his younger brother. I didn’t do that with him though. Shoot, I felt really bad.

Adding Pockets to the Lenox Dress

When I first saw the Lenox dress pattern by Love Notions, I knew it was my kind of dress. There was just one little issue. It didn’t have pockets. No problem! Let me show how I added pockets to my Lenox Dress using a pattern I already had, with just a few simple tweeks. The great thing about this is you don’t have to have these specific patterns. You can do this with any knit dress patterns you might have in your stash already. The idea is the same. You just adjust it for you particular pattern.

Button Front Jumpsuit

I have a burgundy jumpsuit I love to wear on chilly mornings or rainy days. The problem is when it heats up even a little I can’t wear it anymore because it 1. Has long sleeves and 2. Is made of a fleece-like fabric. It looks just like a blue one I recently saw online. I wanted a jumpsuit just like it but with short sleeves and made out of fabric more suitable for warm climates. I decided to trace a pattern from my burgundy on to make a short sleeved, blue one. Here is how I did that. Read more “Button Front Jumpsuit”

I love scrolling through pinterest and online boutiques for sewing inspiration. I feel like I fall down a different rabbit hole everytime I start tapping through pics. While on one of my favorite boutique sites I saw the most comfy and cute jumpsuit. It totally suited my vibe, but did I really need a new jumpsuit? Of course I did and I had the perfect item in my closet ready to refashion into it.
