Beginner Friendly Faux Wrap Dress!

Have you ever had a vision in your head of a dress you wanted but could never find a pattern for? Well I have. Numerous times. That’s why I love a good pattern mash-up. There’s just something so fun about combining elements from patterns you know and love to make something your mind has imagined. In this pattern mash, I combine a faux wrap pencil skirt and a wrap top to make a simple faux wrap dress! It has pockets too so it can be a bit tricky. Here’s a few tips if you would like to do something like this for yourself.

The patterns I will be using for this are both Love Notions Patterns. They are the Willow wrap Dress(top only) and the Sybil Illusion Skirt in the asymmetrical wrap view in the midi length. I will put more info on these patterns at the bottom of this post, as well as a discount code for purchasing these patterns.

I really liked the top part of the Willow Wrap dress but for the dress I had envisioned I wanted the skirt to be more fitted rather than flowy. I also wanted it to have pockets.

The Sybil Asymmetrical Wrap has a pocket included in the pattern. It needed to have a smaller opening though. I didn’t want it to gap open. I just wanted it to be big enough for my hand. So I made a sight adjustment to the pattern pocket opening. You can do this too if you want but it’s not necessary. Then cut out the pieces for the Willow wrap(top part only) and the Sybil Asymmetrical wrap midi length with the pockets. Since I’m adding a pocket to a faux wrap it can be a bit confusing with all the layers of fabric. I took pictures along the way just to help explain the process.

Assemble the front wrap part of the skirt. Baste stitch the wrap to the front side of the skirt, across the top and down the side.

Then place two of the pocket pieces on the front of the skirt, right sides together. Attach at the sides. Do the same to the back of the skirt with the other two pocket pieces.

Then place the back over the front, right side together, and stitch around the pockets and down the sides of the skirt.

Next, fold the pockets over on the front side of the skirt.  Do a basting stitch just on the front side at the top of the pocket to hold it in place.

Then before you turn it right side out, do a small ½ inch stitch at the top side of the pocket to close the skirt side. It’s now ready to attach to the top of the dress.

Assemble the wrap top just as the pattern directions say. Then place one inside the other, right sides together and attach using a small zig zag stitch so it can stretch. Some might find it useful to add ¼ inch wide elastic. I didn’t feel like I needed any so I didn’t do that.

I absolutely love this and have done it in the knee length view as well. It is a dress I will be reaching for over and over.
