Trying Hair Extensions on Short Hair!
Need and instant change for your short hair but short on $$? Try some Clip in hair extensions!
I Love Short Hair but…
Full disclosure, I am a Licensed Cosmetologist of 25 years so I have experience with all kinds of hair techniques. I”m always experimenting with different hairstyles and colors. In May of 2023 I cut my hair pretty short. Ever since then I have been struggling to grow it back out. Right now it’s stuck in the “always flipped out” stage. Which is not my favorite. I love short hair but I would sometimes like to be able to have it do something else. So why not try some clip in extensions?
Where Did I get My Extensions?
I wasn’t sure how much I wanted to commit to this lifestyle so I didn’t splurge on extensions. I went to the place we all know and love for online shopping convenience, AMAZON. I typed in “Best Clip in hair extensions” and read reviews then found a color I could tweak a little to match my own hair. I ended up ordering 14 inch Goo Goo clip in hair extensions in the color 350 copper. They cost $75.99 for the 150 gram, 9 piece set. I did custom color mine using a demi hair color in a rooted, chunky lowlight technique to match my hair better. It was super easy and the extensions took the color exactly how I expected.
What Is Remy Hair?
Goo Goo clip in hair extensions are real Remy Human hair extensions. Remy hair is hair where the cuticles are kept intact and facing the same direction, they are not stripped, which is what happens in most other non-remy human hair extensions. By keeping the hairs’ cuticles, and aligning them to go in the same direction, the hair keeps its natural appearance.
The Set…
The set came in a nice box with: 1 – 8” wide weft with 4 clips, 2 – 6” wide wefts with 3 clips, 4 – 4” wide wefts with 2 clips and 2 – 2” wide wefts with 1 clip. They also came with a clip for holding your hair, some false eyelashes and care instructions.
I have never done any kind of clip-in hair extensions on myself but I have put them on countless other clients and family members. These were really easy to do and on myself in about 10 minutes. My hair is slightly curled because this is second day hair for me, and the extensions had curl in then from when I colored them.
Section One…
Because these are clip-ins you don’t have to worry about your sections being parted perfectly straight. The first section is just a little below the top of my ear. I clipped the rest of my hair out of the way. Then using a rattail comb I backcombed that section a little. This is done for every section to help the clips hold the hair. Once I did that I put a two clip weft in.
Section Two…
The next section was done 1 inch above my ear all the way around my head. After backcombing the hair, I used two, 3 clip wefts on the is section. I started in the front, 1 and ½ inch away from my front hairline. This way the extensions won’t be seen. The two wefts meet in the back.
Section Three…
The next section is at my temples on both sides and all the way around the back. Three wefts were used on this section. After backcombing, I used a 4 clip weft in the back and a 2 clip weft for each side.
Pony Tail…
Then because I wanted to do a ponytail at the top I got my two 1 clip wefts. I parted out a section at the very front and clipped it out of the way, then I clipped one weft in the middle, parted another section under that and clipped another weft. I didn’t back comb because they were going in a ponytail.
Then I pulled the top part up into my invisibobble hair tie, because I love those.
Last Section…
I had one, 2 clip weft left so I put it above the 4 clip weft in the back and then backcombed the hair above it so that it would for sure cover the weft.
Adjust as Needed…
I had to adjust the side wefts a little so that they could be hidden better, but I don’t really get close enough to people for them to inspect my hair. If you are a perfectionist you might want to go in and curl your natural hair a little, but I probably wouldn’t. I really love how realistic they look and that I have more options for my hair now.
So what do you think? Have you ever tried clip in hair extensions for a day? If you have, let me know your favorite brands! I’d love to check those out.
