Sweatshirts for Halloween Costumes!
Halloween is a whole family affair in my family. The kids love it and look forward to the yearly shenanigans. We start planning it as soon as the previous one is over. So when we decided that our Halloween 2023 theme would be Mario Kart, my youngest son had his costume idea immediately planned out. We try to keep it simple while still maintaining the fun theme. I try to make costumes using normal, everyday attire patterns. Because of that, most of the time the things I make for costumes can be worn long after Halloween is over. When I got word of the Sideline and the Tailgate patterns from Love Notions I knew they would be perfect for not just my son’s costume but mine as well.
Who is Shy Guy…
Our family loves the more obscure characters from the Mario Bro’s franchise. As a family, we play a quick game of Mario Kart nearly every night. My youngest son loves the Mario Kart character ‘Shy Guy’ and chooses him over and over. This masked character is usually thought of as a trouble maker. Armies of Shy Guy creatures are followers of villans like Wart and King Boo. When I asked my son why he likes him so much he said, “ I like the noises he makes, he’s funny and a little mysterious too.” This character is such a beloved little weirdo it’s hardo not to like him.
To make this costume, all I needed was a “Shy Guy” mask (which I ordered on Amazon), a red oversized hoodie and some jogger style pants. The Sideline hoodie is a little over sized so it would work great. It was hard to find sweatshirt fabric here where I live in Arizona but I did find an XL sweatshirt in the perfect color at Joann’s that I was able to use to make his Sideline hoodie. He loves it and can wear it after Halloween is over. His pants are just some blue joggers I made a few years ago. We finished off the look with a wide belt from my wardrobe.
Who is Lakitu….
If you have ever played Mario Kart you are probably familiar with the little shelled character that floats around in a cloud and uses a fishing pole to grab you when you fall off the track. He starts the race and lets you know what lap you are on. This character keeps track of everyone and saves you from certain death. Sounds kind of like a mom, right? Although this is NOT the character I choose when we play, it is the character that I felt suited me most for our themed Halloween costumes.
To make the costume, I thought another hoodie in bright yellow, and a tutu for my cloud would be perfect. I found some bright yellow fleece on sale at Joann’s. For my tutu cloud, I layered some netting and tulle then gathered it with elastic. For the goggles, I used some felt and cut out something to resemble wide rimmed glasses. It looks ridiculous and that’s just what I wanted.
The turtle shell on my back is basically a travel pillow I made a cover for. I did add a few darts to the green cover to try and round it a bit. I also added some gold fabric around the perimeter of the “shell.” Then I just put some drawstring chords on the corners to function like backpack straps.
These costumes were so simple to throw together! I love that I was able to use a simple hoodie pattern to make these fun costumes.
