My Faux Jumpsuits
Anyone who knows me, knows I’m a pro at getting ready. It’s my job after all. I can do it in a little under 20 min; showered, dressed, hair and makeup. So I especially love simple outfits like jumpsuits. They make getting ready that much easier because there is less too pick out or worry about. Plus, when I’m having a day where I feel bloated or just kind of gross, I can throw on a jumpsuit and feel stylish but comfy. I don’t even think about stomach pooch or the cookies that I ate the day before. The only thing I really don’t like about a jumpsuit is wrestling my body in and out of it when I go to the restroom. I mean, I’m not as limber as I used to be so it can be a chore. On days that I really want the comfort of a jumpsuit but not the hassle, I reach for my faux pieces and no one knows the difference.
Here are my go to patterns I used to create the following faux looks.
- This is a free digital pattern. Its a great one to start with if you have never tried a digital pattern. It has short and long sleeve options as well as elbow patches.
Tilly and the Buttons Stella Joggers from the sewing book Stretch!
- This is a wonderful book that comes with some lovely paper patterns. It’s great for beginners who are needing more encouragement to sew with knit fabrics. You could actually create a faux look using only patterns from this book. The only change I made to the joggers was I made the band around the bottom of the legs half as wide as was called for. That way it’s just a skinny band at the ankle.
- This a digital pattern as well. It’s my favorite pattern from this particular indie company. Although their Classic tee would be a good one too. I didn’t add the flounce sleeves, instead I did a 1/2″ hem.
- This is a paper pattern. It’s my go to pattern when I need a quick sew. It comes with a cute raglan top as well as a simple pencil skirt. These patterns would also be great for creating a faux look.
I created the look below with the Raglan Top from the Simplicity pattern and the Tilly and the Buttons Stella Joggers. It’s super comfy and kind of has a jumpsuit vibe. I like the contrast of the front pattern piece.
Although this look isn’t a jumpsuit look, I created it with the same patterns I used in the above looks. This is the Plantain Tee and the Simplicity pants with the Stella Jogger pockets. I could easily wear my black shirt with these pants to give the look of a jumpsuit.
My favorite fabric for all these faux look is of course an ITY knit: Interlock Twist Yarn. It has more elasticity, isn’t usually see through and has a super soft feel inside and out. Plus because it’s a poly/lycra blend it doesn’t really wrinkle. Like hardly at all. Fabric Mart has a huge selection of ITY knits but I’ve also found them in solid colors at the Walmart fabric section too.
Of course you can use whatever pattern and fabric you have on hand. Just sew the top and bottom pieces in the same fabric and wear them together, maybe throw on a belt. Bam! Faux jumpsuit.
