Check This Out – 4 Pattern Mash-up!
It’s no secret that I love to take my favorite patterns and mash them together. Most of the time I mash patterns from the same companies. Not today! Today I’m going to show you how I mashed 4 patterns from 3 different companies to get a glorious jumpsuit that I adore!!
The Kielo wrap dress by Named Patterns is a favorite of almost anyone who makes it. I purchased the dress pattern years ago and have made it several times since. They updated this pattern to include a pants option now. So if you like this jumpsuit you can just purchase the Kielo Wrap Dress and Jumpsuit pattern. However, I would have to repurchase and reprint the pattern to get that option. I figured I could hack my own in the same amount of time. So that’s what I did.
Now, I don’t know much about pattern drafting, but I have been sewing for myself and hacking patterns for over 30 years. I felt confident that I could get the results I wanted if I used patterns I was familiar with and fit my body well. The patterns I used may not work for you to do this so I suggest you use patterns that you know well and work with your body.
Let’s just get right into it.
I will be showing what I did for the front portion only. The back was done the same way. I did this by layering different patterns on top of each other and then tracing it all into a new pattern to be used.
First, I needed a base pattern to help me get the measurements right through the crotch and torso. The Jump Up Suit by Alice and Co was perfect for that because it’s ust two pattern pieces like the Kielo Wrap dress. I layed the Jump Up suit pattern down first then layed the Kielo Wrap dress on top of it.
I made sure to match up the waistlines. I traced it in pencil because I was going to be adjusting and erasing.
The legs of the Jump Up suit are a wide fit and I wanted a narrow fit. For this reason I decided to use the Allegro bottoms by Love Notions Patterns. I have used the Allegro bottoms before in other jumpsuit hacks so the bottoms were already adjusted throughout the rise to be high enough for this project. You can see my other hacks here and here. For reference, these are the size 10 Allegro bottoms and the rise is raised 5.5 inches.
I layed the Allegros on top of the other two patterns to get the leg width. I traced the new legs and adjusted with my french curve ruler where needed. That was mostly where the wrap part of the dress met with the Allegro pants. I used the Allegro crotch rather than the Jump Up suit crotch.
Since this jumpsuit was going to have to go over my hips for entrance and exit I needed a neckline that I knew could accommodate that. The Sunday Romper by Love Notions fit the bill! Its v-neck works perfect for me to get on and off over my hips. I layed that over the top and traced the neckline.
I used a combination of the Jump Up suit and the Kielo dress to make the shoulder and armscye. Then I used the Kielo Sleeve add-on in the elbow length. I’ve had that since I purchased the original dress a few years ago so my pattern was already adjusted through the armscye to fit a sleeve.
This is what the new patterns looked like once I was finished with all my adjustments. I had this wild ITY knit from Minerva that I really wanted to use for this project. I only had two yards so I really had to play pattern Tetris. Luckily it worked and I now have a lovely jumpsuit that I love wearing!
It’s Super comfortable and the fun details and wild fabric give it a truly original look. I’m so glad I did this. Maybe you can try something like this too! You can use code KOE10 to get a discount the Love Notions Patterns I used in this post.
